in the dark we see, in the black we run
I am currently experiencing "being driven crazy by vague memories of a children's book". Can anyone help me? (I've also cross-posted the below to [community profile] whatwasthatbook.)

I'm looking for a book I had as a child (in the 90s), but was already quite old.

It was a collection of poems about various monsters/creatures, all of which were original to that book. It had a lot of non-colour line illustrations among the text.

I don't remember the names of any of the creatures, but there was a species rather like dragonflies but with six wings, one where the creatures were shaped like eggs and hopped on a singular leg, one which had large eyes and lurked at the edge of a park, and some massive sort of mammoth/elephant thing.

Anyone recognise any of this? Please feel free to suggest your own reward...

Was it The Light in the Attic? I think that was the title. I don't remember the dragonfly creature but the egg shaped creature and the massive elephant I remember from a book that had poems.

If it is not that maybe it is by the same author. I think there were others in a series or that were similar by the same person.

Hope this helps.

I think the egg creature had the elephant/mammoth creature on a chain in one part. That doesn't help figure out the book but I just remembered that.

No, it's not that one, or by that author. :( Thanks, though!

Well I hope you find which book it is. I am intrigued now. What you described sounds so familiar.

I'll tell you what it is if I manage to locate it!

My wild guess is John Ciardi's The Monster Den with illustrations by Edward Gorey.

No, that's not it either, sadly. But thank you!

Edward Lear's Nonsense Books?

Sadly not :( But I do love Lear! I used to know all the long ones by heart...

Probably not this one, but I'll share just in case (had a search on abebooks!):

Nah, not that either - the book I'm looking for was just by one author, rather than a compilation.

(I'm beginning to wonder if it's out of print, actually...)

I had a feeling it wasn't. Ah well, sorry I can't help more.

Now it's kinda driving me crazy in that 'why can't I find this' sort of way. Do you remember anything else? I have the same problem myself with a book by a Danish author... I remember a boy and a forest with cone people. It'll haunt me forever.
